SAN MATEO COUNTY, Calif. — Sheriff Christina Corpus has announced the creation of a child care center exclusively for employees of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, according to a department news release.

The facility is designed to support law enforcement professionals by offering accessible, affordable child care with extended hours to accommodate non-traditional shifts, according to the release.

“The challenges of law enforcement don’t stop at the end of a shift,” Corpus said. “…By supporting the wellbeing of our law enforcement families, this initiative also strengthens the safety and security of the communities we serve.”

The day care center aims to improve employee retention and recruitment by addressing work-life balance challenges, a significant issue in law enforcement. Corpus also highlighted the facility’s potential to save taxpayers money by reducing recruitment and overtime costs associated with employee turnover, according to the release.

The 30x30 Initiative aims to increase the representation of women in police ranks to 30% by 2030. This video dives deep into why this is crucial for better policing and how departments nationwide are making strides toward this goal.

Additionally, the initiative aligns with the sheriff’s office’s as well as national efforts to close the gender gap in law enforcement. Corpus emphasized the agency’s commitment to the 30x30 Pledge, which seeks to have 30% of academy classes comprised of women by 2030.

“By prioritizing employee and family needs, we’re sending a strong message: law enforcement is a career for everyone, and we’re committed to building an inclusive and diverse future,” Corpus said.
